Self-preservation.

What I find so peculiar is that as human beings, we are told, that it is in our nature to love. When really, we spend so much time living in fear. Even when we have absolutely no experience with romantic relationships, we are afraid of rejection. We fear solitude. But as a friend recently brought up, we desire belonging more than true love. We are gravely concerned with self-preservation. But for what? and why? What are we preserving? If we never take risks, then ultimately we will die alone. So again I question, what is the point? Why do we not love more? And why do we not love openly?

Maybe Maslow had it all right.
