What if an afterlife doesn't exist?

A response to my psychology professor's question," Regardless of your convictions regarding an afterlife, imagine that the life we have now is indeed all we, as individuals, will have. What implications would that have for how you live your life?

If our minds cease to exist when we die, then yes, I would say that it would make many implications for this waking life that I am living. All of the decisions I am making in my life now, all revolve around leaving an impression for the future. I really want to improve and better the quality of life that we are living today. Right now, I am working towards my Bachelor's in Psychology. After my undergraduate work, I will attend graduate school. This is to further my long-term goal of creating and opening a total wellness center here in Nevada. Total wellness encompasses physical, mental and emotional well-being. I feel if I can achieve all of my goals before I die, then I will have attained my version of success, or if I can better the quality of life in some way, then I will have attained success. I think the main implication for the idea if we die our minds die with us, is if I don't achieve anything, or if I don't leave an impression in some way, shape or form then all of my efforts for today have been wasted. Rather, my thoughts and ideas, if not put into action would have been a waste and my life would be made useless by merely thinking and not doing.
